The Conn Vintage 8D (or V8D) is from a line of horns created by C.G. Conn in the US during the early 70s into the 80s. This horn in particular was most likely produced in Abilene, Texas, and is sometimes referred to as an “Abilene Era” horn. It was made early in the production cycle, we would guess early 70s, judging by the low serial number of 000048.
The bell itself has some pock marks on the lacquer, as you can see in the picture, but it has never been dented or dropped at all. The slides on the horn are tight, unlike some vintage horns that have them sliding right out when played. One particular thing to note is that the valve compression has been tested and has resulted in excellent readings. All in all, the horn is in no need of further service and is ready to pick up and play, truly in excellent condition for a horn of its age.
This horn is a bit heavier than one might expect from a modern, similar professional horn. It caters itself toward a larger player, although it is managable by players of all sizes and has a large booming orchestral sound. Previously, this horn was owned by a military musician, and will produce a sound that is perfect for loud film scores or intense moments in Mahler.
Complete with a detachable bell and an excellent protective case, also in great condition, this horn comes with everything but the mouthpiece.
